Summer is here and there’s nothing worse than having to deal with high temperatures without working air conditioning units. As we experienced record temperatures in previous years, many homes and businesses in the UK are considering air conditioning where they haven’t before. However, if your home or business has an air conditioning unit, it’s important to keep up with any maintenance or repairs.
Here are five signs your air conditioning needs to be replaced.
Lack of cool air and limited airflow
It’s best to turn your air conditioning on before it really gets hot so that you can check it’s working okay.
If you switch it on and it’s not pumping out cold air in a few minutes, it’s likely there may be an issue. There could also be a clog in the piping or ductwork so you may need to call an air conditioning engineer to get to the root of the problem.
Build-up of moisture
It’s normal for an AC unit to create a little moisture but if it is functioning properly, this shouldn’t be an issue. A refrigerant leak could cause leakage or moisture to be present around the AC. This problem shouldn’t be overlooked as it could cause the system to underperform and also poses a health risk to you and everyone in the building. Even if you don’t see any mould, not solving the issue early on can create a breeding ground for bacteria.
Strange sounds
Generally, you shouldn’t be able to notice your air conditioning being on. If you can hear noises like grinding, chattering or squeaking, this isn’t normal and may mean your air conditioning unit is ageing and needs to be replaced.
Foul smells
Similarly, you should never be able to smell your air conditioning unit. It should pump out clean, neutral-smelling air. If you notice a smell like smoke or burning, alert your AC engineer straight away as this could be a fire hazard.
High energy bills
The older an AC unit is, the harder it has to work to cool the air. If you notice that your energy bills are particularly high, this may be a sign that it is time to get a new one. By upgrading to a new AC unit you can ensure you will have a system that is energy efficient and offers you lower energy bills, helping you save money in the long run.
